WordPress image upload not working, “Unable to create directory…”

Recently I upgraded my wordpress installation to version 3.4.2. I wanted to upload a picture for my post so I tried the media upload but it didn’t work. I got an error message saying “Unable to create directory uploads/2012/09. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”

After digging around without much success, I finally looked under wordpress “Media Settings” (Settings >> Media). The uploads folder was set to an absolute path like /home/<server-name>/<user-name>/<site-folder>/wp-content/uploads. I changed it to the recommended relative path wp-content/uploads. With that little change the media upload was working once again.
